Do you know how to choose a drug rehab facility? If you have a drug addiction and need help, you will want to know what type of treatment options are available to you at a drug rehab. Recovery is more than just getting weaned off of drugs. To make a positive change in your life you will need other treatment and therapy programs after you go through detox.

And for treatment to be effective and successful, the National Institute on Drug Abuse recommends a treatment program that consists of 90 days or more. You will need time to heal and change your ways, and that can only happen when you commit to a comprehensive treatment program. Here are some tips for choosing a rehab facility:

1. Assessment and Individualized Treatment

There is no such thing as a “one size fits all” approach to treating addiction. Each patient is unique with their own physical and mental health and addiction problems. Some questions to ask the drug rehab center are:

  • Is each patient treated as an individual with their own special needs and challenges?
  • Is each patient medically assessed?
  • Is a treatment plan formulated that is based on the results of the assessment?

2. Maintenance Treatment

In some rehab facilities, the patient may be given a substitute medication to replace the drug he is addicted to. The use of these medications is called “maintenance treatment” and is given in controlled doses to prevent abuse. This is a common approach when treating heroin/opioid addiction. You will want to know if drug addiction is treated by using medications that take the place of the drug, such as methadone or buprenorphine.

3. A Medical Detox

A medically supervised detox is the first phase of addiction treatment where the patient is gradually weaned off of the offending substance. The patient is monitored throughout the procedure, kept stable and safe, and may be given medications to help alleviate withdrawal symptoms. Does the rehab facility offer a medical detox?

4. Psychological Counseling and Behavioral Therapy

Other questions to ask the drug rehab center are what types of treatment programs do they have? If you have a serious addiction you will need specific treatment such as: individual and group counseling, behavior modification therapy, relapse prevention and aftercare. Other significant programs can include: family counseling, contingency management and others. Ask for an explanation of each program.

5. Relapse Prevention, and Aftercare

There are specific acquired skills that you will need to stay sober after you have left the rehab center. Relapse prevention strategies will teach you how to manage drug cravings, triggers, temptations, strong emotions, and toxic people and situations. After care usually includes visiting your counselor or therapist, and attending support group meetings after you have left the rehab center.

6. Nutrition

Drug addiction can cause devastating damage to the physical and mental health of the addict. The immune system usually becomes weakened and the addict can be susceptible to infection and disease. A good rehab center will provide essential nutrition to build up the body again, and they may also have programs for the patient to exercise. Ask the rehab center if they use a nutrition replacement plan.

7. Inpatient and Outpatient

The program you will need to recover from addiction is dependent on the severity of your addiction. Ask the rehab center what type of programs they have such as: inpatient, intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization and others.

8. Dual Diagnosis

Approximately 50% of drug addicts suffer with mental health disorders, and each problem exacerbates the other. If you have mental health issues, you will want the rehab center to treat your mental condition along with your drug addiction. Ask the rehab if they have dual-diagnosis treatment.

9. Holistic Approach to Healing

The most effective way to stay sober is to become whole in body, mind and spirit. Ask the rehab center if they offer a holistic approach to treating addiction.

10. Structured, Safe Environment

Another one of the questions to ask the rehab center is if they offer a structured, safe environment for you to stay in. What are their qualifications, and is their staff friendly and compassionate, and will your privacy be respected?

These are some of our tips for choosing a drug rehab facility. You can add other questions to the list such as: insurance coverage, visitation, etc. Once you find the right rehab facility, you will be able to begin your journey back to wholeness.
