12 Step Programs
What Is a 12-Step Program?
A 12-step program is an addiction recovery program usually facilitated by a professional counselor or therapist who leads a group through a series of steps on the path to recovery. This approach was originally used in the late 1930s by Alcoholics Anonymous but has since been adapted to aid people's recovery from a variety of addictions or psychological problems. These programs begin with the victim of addiction admitting that their problem is out of their control. Through the series of steps in the 12-step recovery program, they then go through a process of self-reflection, making amends for their past behavior and finally becoming equipped to help others get sober. For those who have successfully completed a customized program at an addiction treatment center, a 12-step recovery program can provide community support to hold you accountable and keep you sober once you have finished treatment and resumed your normal life.
The steps of a 12-step drug program include:
- Admitting that you have a problem
- Acknowledging that you need the help of a higher power to overcome the problem
- Surrendering control of the problem to that a higher power
- Taking inventory of ourselves
- Admitting the wrong that we have done
- Becoming ready to let the higher power correct our defects
- Asking the higher power to remove those defects
- Make a list of who we have hurt with our actions and becoming open to making amends with them
- Making those amends
- Continuing to take inventory of ourselves and quickly correct wrongs we commit
- Keeping in touch with the higher power
- Helping others who have had the same problem
Although the original program has been criticized for being overly religious, many modern programs have encouraged participants to consider whatever higher power they may believe in, whether that be a spiritual being or something as simple as "reality" or "truth," making the program appropriate for anyone, regardless of their beliefs.
