I transferred to Family Guidance Center in Aurora from another clinic in Downers Grove, and I have been going here for over six months. I think FGC does a wonderful job, especially considering that it is a non-profit / state funded organization. I was previously at a private clinic in Downers grove a west suburb of Chicago for about 5 months before transferring to FGC and I have to admit that I find FGC far superior to a program that I had to pay $70 EVERY week for and almost $500 in initial fees when I first started! I wasn't able to continue to afford the help at that other program, and was basically going to be thrown out of the program there because I was 3 weeks behind in paying my weekly fee -- when you are getting clean, and fixing/changing your life in a variety of ways, many people are very broke and don't have much if any money - and may not be able to work a lot right away, until you get stable and can work like normal again. Well. That's where I was. And the $70 per week / $280 a month in fees - on top of the $500 initial fees to start, and the cost in terms of transportation or gas of driving to the clinic every single day except sundays for months and months - made it impossible for me to continue to get the help I need. I was being taken off maintenance medication after only 5 months on it because I was 3 weeks behind - medication that is incredibly cheap, and medication that had worked and kept me clean, kept me from using those entire 5 months - the medication that Helped me become emotionally, mentally and physicially stable for the first time in years! They were just taking me off of all medication even though it was helping me so much and I knew for a fact that without it at that point I would start using again, and yet they started to take me off it completely within just 4 days simply based on being a few weeks behind - to pay even what I had paid up until then, was incredibly difficult. It made it very clear that money was most important to that clinic, way way wayyyu above helping people recover from addiction and become a better part of society again. However - thank goodness I found the Family Guidance Centers information and contacted them. They were so nice to me from day one. They were able to get me in for a transfer appointment within a few days which helped me to make sure I never stopped taking the medication and ensure I would stay clean. I was able to transfer over from the previous clinic, and at FGC I was provided what I felt was a much better environment and better help. First, they don't have what I call a "pay for play" policy like the previous clinic in Downers Grove had -- the previous clinic didn't test for a variety of drugs, which allowed ppl to keep using other drugs, and they didn't test for things like THC at all, -and they didn't test for things like Benzo's if you didn't have them in your system the first time you came in. I had wondered why so many people went there and yet they had no money and why they didn't go to other programs - but I think the reason was / is because they would rather scrape together the money so they can still use other drugs. I feel FGC really cares about their clients and they want to try and help you the best they can, and sometimes helping their clients is going to be taking a hardline with someone or making very clear rules set for clients. That other review seems completely contrary to my experience at FGC. Nurse Dorothy is nothing but a sweetheart who treats everyone nicely and with respect. The other nurses are also all great. It seems as though the other reviewer had unrealistic expectations and expected the clinic to do what they wanted them to do without regard to following the procedures or being respectful of the ways in which clients must compromise at times due to the fact that FGC is a non-profit, government funded organzation that doesn't have a lot of funding, whose counselors have 2-3x the number of clients that they really "should" have, etc. FGC has been a blessing to help me change my entire life for the better!
