Basic Rehab Rules to Follow

Agreeing to accept help is a tremendous step toward addiction recovery and should be commended. However, agreeing to get help and actively working within the guidelines of a recovery program are two completely different actions. Patients and their loved ones may not immediately realize that in rehab, rules exist that may curtail the freedom they enjoy in day-to-day life. Reassurance can be found in the knowledge that these rules exist for a reason and need be followed only until completion of the program, although some patients might choose to keep following them in their lives after rehab.

Common Drug Rehab Rules

Every facility will have its own unique rules and guidelines, but some rehab rules are common to many inpatient and outpatient facilities.

  • No Personal Phones or Computers: Restricting communication may seem extreme, but the rule is designed to keep patients safe from friends and relatives who may still be willing to supply drugs. The rule also helps protect the privacy of other patients in the rehab. Patients are usually still allowed to call family and use the Internet in a supervised, scheduled manner.
  • Commit to and Attend All Meetings: When you first enter rehab, meetings may seem like a waste of time, but meetings are one of the most valuable aspects of rehab, and skipping them robs you of the quality care you deserve.
  • No Drugs or Alcohol: Rehab is an environment for healing. No drugs or alcohol will be permitted in a treatment facility. The sole exception is prescription medication, which may be retained after an inspection by highly trained medical professionals. Patients can still be kept comfortable through withdrawal with a medically assisted detox, as any medications needed for this process will be administered by the facility.
  • Respect Any Travel Restrictions: Most inpatient rehabilitation centers have a policy that patients cannot leave the facility, at least for the first few weeks, without an employee present. This can be jarring, especially if patients are used to being able to come and go as they like. However, this rule is critically important for both the safety of the patient and the effectiveness of the treatment.
  • No Romantic Relationships: The goal of rehab is to enable all patients to focus on their recovery. For this reason, romantic relationships between patients are often not allowed, as they can be distracting and complicate a person’s recovery. Similarly, if a couple decides to attend rehab, they may need to enroll in separate facilities in order to allow each individual to focus on their own recovery.
  • Follow the Rehab Schedule: Rehab facilities will often have full schedules for their patients, including everything from waking up to meals and free time. Schedules help foster time management skills, which may need to be rebuilt after a prolonged period of drug abuse, and they also ensure that patients can find the necessary time for introspection and self-reflection.

When it comes to choosing the right drug rehab, rules might factor into your decision, but they are only one aspect that can influence the success of a program.
