Montana also has one of the highest suicide rates in the nation and a significant number of residents in the state suffer from depression.

Although Montana has a small population, it offers several different types of rehab centers and treatment facilities for residents struggling with drug addiction, alcoholism and co-occurring substance abuse and mental health problems. Even in rural parts of Montana, there are treatment centers that offer programs for low-income residents with financial need.

  • Montana state population: 1 million
  • Number of people in Montana who abuse alcohol or are alcohol-dependent: 75,000
  • Roughly 2% of Montana residents abuse illicit drugs or struggle with drug addiction
  • Nearly 50,000 adults in Montana deal with a serious mental illness

Alcoholism in Montana

In Montana, drunk driving is a major concern. According to data from 2012, nearly 3.5% of residents report driving after drinking too much, which is well above the national average. Underage drinking is also an issue, with roughly 40% of youths ages 18-20 in Montana engaging in binge drinking at least once in the past month.

Montana has a variety of treatment centers that focus on helping individuals overcome alcoholism and substance abuse.

One of the most top-quality, comprehensive rehab centers in Montana is Wilderness Treatment Center in Marion. The facility has an inpatient (residential) program that provides housing and meals in addition to treatment. The Wilderness Treatment Center is open to young men and adolescent boys and aims to introduce young people to a new way of life free from drugs and alcohol. Participating in outdoor activities is a key component of treatment at Wilderness, as the rehab center encourages young men to participate in challenging activities like backpacking, cross country skiing, rappelling, ranch work and a wilderness expedition.

Located in Billings, Mental Health Center is a private, payment-assisted rehab facility that offers treatment for co-occurring mental health and substance abuse issues. Mental Health Center provides an outpatient program for residents dealing with these struggles and accepts Medicare and Medicaid. The facility is open to men, women and young adults and offers a family program, in which loved ones and family members participate in an addict’s treatment and recovery.

Drug Abuse in Montana

Like many other states across the nation, prescription drug abuse in Montana is on the rise. From 2011 to 2013, over 350 people in Montana died from prescription drug overdose. Almost 4% of adults in Montana have admitted to using prescription painkillers for a nonmedical reason in the past year.

The state of Montana provides several options for residents seeking treatment for drug abuse and addiction. One such facility is Rocky Mountain Treatment Center in Great Falls. Rocky Mountain Treatment Center is a rehab facility offering comprehensive, top-rated inpatient and outpatient programs for addiction treatment and recovery. Located in a private residential area, this rehab center is housed in a 26-bed converted historic building, providing a small, personal feel for participants enrolled in a treatment program.

For those in need of a payment-assisted treatment option for rehab, Pathways Treatment Center is a private facility in Kalispell. Pathways offers an inpatient program and is open to men, women, young adults and children. The treatment center provides multiple therapy options for those in recovery from addiction, including individual therapy, group therapy and couples counseling. Pathways accepts Medicaid, Medicare, private health insurance and military health insurance.

Mental Health in Montana

Montana has the second-highest suicide rate in the U.S. An estimated 20 people out of every 100,000 die by suicide each year. According to data from 2014, nearly 9% of Montana high school students have attempted suicide in the past 12 months.

In Montana, there are several facilities that provide treatment for mental illness, such as major depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

Acadia Montana - Altacare of Montana is a private treatment center in Butte. Acadia Montana offers a residential treatment program and also provides a day school for patients. The facility has multiple therapy options for individuals dealing with mental health issues, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Creative Arts Therapy, which can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings in a creative or nontraditional way.

Located in Missoula, St. Patrick Hospital - Urgent Mental Health is a private, payment-assisted treatment center that specializes in mental health. St. Patrick Hospital has both an inpatient and outpatient program and is open to men, women, teenagers and children. The treatment center has a dedicated team of bilingual (Spanish-speaking) therapists and staff and also has a special program for patients with HIV or AIDS. St. Patrick Hospital also offers a designated program for active duty military seeking mental health treatment.

Does Medicaid Cover Drug Rehab In Montana?

There are several facilities in Montana that accept Medicaid and Medicare as a form of payment. While Medicaid may not cover the full cost of rehab, it can lessen the financial burden for those in need of treatment for drug and alcohol abuse.

To qualify for Medicaid, residents must meet certain requirements. One must either be a parent, pregnant, under the age of 19 or an adult living within a specific income bracket. Residents who earn less than 133% of the federal poverty level qualify for Medicaid.

In Montana, the state-run Chemical Dependency Bureau provides chemical dependency resources and services to residents in need. There are a variety of programs located throughout Montana that offer services for addiction, substance abuse, mental illness and co-occurring drug and alcohol abuse and mental health issues. The state of Montana also provides addiction treatment and recovery services for adolescents.

How Long Is Inpatient Drug Rehab In Montana?

The length of a drug abuse treatment and rehabilitation program varies depending on the facility or type of rehab center. The time it takes to overcome addiction is an individual process that can involve many steps.

Typically, inpatient (residential) treatment centers offer 30-, 60- or 90-day drug rehab programs. Many inpatient programs involve medically-assisted detox, which is the process of removing drugs and alcohol from the body in a safe way, under the supervision of medical professionals.

In addition to inpatient programs, many facilities also offer outpatient programs, intensive outpatient programs and aftercare support. Outpatient programs offer a variety of resources and support services for recovering addicts, including therapy, counseling, 12-step meetings and family programs, in which loved ones and family members participate in the drug rehabilitation and treatment process.

Following the completion of an inpatient or outpatient program, some recovering addicts choose to enroll in a sober living community or halfway house. These sober living homes provide a supportive, substance-free environment where addicts can focus on maintaining a drug and alcohol-free lifestyle.

Montana: Looking Ahead

Montana’s state officials are taking concrete steps to combat drunk driving and prescription drug abuse, as well as reduce its high suicide rate. The state has a “Vision Zero” initiative aimed at eliminating traffic deaths and car crashes, including those that involve alcohol impairment. Due to changes in healthcare laws, more residents in Montana are now eligible for drug and alcohol addiction treatment.

The state of Montana is working hard to provide more residents with access to behavioral health services, including critical treatment for mental health and substance abuse. Residents in rural areas do have options for drug and alcohol rehabilitation treatment, and people want to help. Assistance is available to those who need it, regardless of financial position.
