Alcoholism, Drug Abuse, Mental Health, and Treatment in New Hampshire

New Hampshire Summary:

Like other states in New England, New Hampshire is currently dealing with incidents of heavy drinking, alcoholism and prescription drug abuse. Residents in New Hampshire drink more than bordering states such as Vermont and Maine, and this can contribute to alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency. More people in New Hampshire are also abusing prescription painkillers, which has resulted in a spike of drug overdose deaths in the state.

However, residents in New Hampshire have access to many types of treatment facilities and drug rehab recovery programs. Despite its small population, New Hampshire offers residents both luxury and payment-assisted options for substance abuse treatment and recovery.

Quick New Hampshire statistics:

  • New Hampshire state population: 1.3 million
  • Number of people in New Hampshire who abuse alcohol and/or drugs: 130,000
  • Number of people in New Hampshire with a serious mental illness: 65,000
  • Some of the most commonly abused substances in New Hampshire include alcohol, prescription drugs and marijuana

Alcoholism in New Hampshire

New Hampshire sees high rates of heavy drinking. According to data from 2012, the per capita consumption of alcoholic beverages in New Hampshire was nearly double the national average. Reports from 2015 revealed that 64% of New Hampshire residents age 12 and over drink monthly -- the highest rate in the U.S.

New Hampshire has several facilities that specialize in the treatment of alcoholism and substance abuse.

Located in Keene, Phoenix House offers a comprehensive treatment program for those seeking to overcome drug and alcohol abuse. The facility provides medically-assisted detox, which involves removing drugs and alcohol from the body under medical supervision. Phoenix House has inpatient and outpatient programs and is founded on the 12-step model of drug treatment and recovery. Keene is situated in New England’s Mount Monadnock Region, giving individuals enrolled in Phoenix House the opportunity to participate in educational, cultural and recreational opportunities in a serene and scenic environment.

For those in need of a payment-assisted option for rehab, Webster Place - Farnum North Campus is a facility in Franklin. Located on a 15-acre farm overlooking a river, the Webster Place campus offers patients the chance to focus on recovery away from the noise and stress of daily life. The facility also has private accommodations, an exercise and music room, a volleyball court, and offers acupuncture treatments, meditation and yoga classes. Treatment programs at Webster Place include a variety of outdoor and recreational activities, including field trips to lakes, oceans, baseball games and other events.

Drug Abuse in New Hampshire

Opioid addiction and drug overdoses are on the rise in New Hampshire. In 2015, more than 400 people in the state died of drug overdose. The majority of these overdoses were related to opioids, including prescription opiates and illegal drugs like heroin.

In New Hampshire, residents have a number of options for rehab centers that focus on drug abuse and addiction treatment.

Located in Concord, New England Recovery and Wellness is a luxury rehab center that provides a holistic approach to addiction treatment and recovery. This state-of-the-art facility offers luxury accommodations and specializes in opioid addiction treatment, which includes the abuse of illicit drugs like heroin, as well as prescription opiates like oxycodone and codeine. When clients are first admitted to New England Recovery and Wellness, they meet with their primary therapist and a consulting psychiatrist. Together, these medical professionals help patients design a treatment plan that is customized to meet their individual needs.

The Plymouth House is a payment-assisted, nonprofit treatment center in Plymouth. The Plymouth House offers a residential treatment program and is focused primarily on the 12-step model of recovery. The facility also provides an array of outdoor and recreational activities for participants, including hiking, meditation and yoga workshops. Situated in a scenic, rural setting, The Plymouth House campus also has walking paths, a vegetable garden and hiking trails. The facility is open to men, women and young adults and offers a daily or monthly fee payment option.

Mental Health in New Hampshire

According to the New Hampshire Mental Health Block Grant, just over 5% of residents in the state live with a serious mental illness. Roughly 20% of adults in New Hampshire report dealing with some type of mental health issue in the past year.

New Hampshire has multiple facilities for residents in need of treatment for mental health issues like major depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

One such facility is Genesis Behavioral Health, a nonprofit treatment center in Plymouth. Genesis Behavioral Health provides treatment, resources and services for individuals struggling with mental illness and co-occurring mental health and substance abuse problems. The facility offers both an outpatient program and a family program, in which loved ones and family members are encouraged to participate in a patient’s treatment and recovery. In addition to traditional therapy methods, Genesis Behavioral Health also offers Eating Disorder Treatment, Nutrition Therapy and Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT). The facility accepts Medicaid, Medicare and operates on a sliding-fee scale.

How many rehab centers are there in New Hampshire?

There are a variety of rehab centers in New Hampshire that offer an array of resources and services for residents struggling with alcoholism, drug abuse or co-occurring substance abuse and mental health issues.

New Hampshire’s treatment system consists of multiple levels of care, including outpatient programs, intensive outpatient programs, partial hospitalization, residential programs, withdrawal management and peer and non-peer recovery support services. Many of these services accept Medicaid and Medicare or private health insurance plans. Some of these drug rehab facilities and substance abuse treatment programs are funded by the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services.

How long is inpatient drug rehab in New Hampshire?

For anyone struggling with alcoholism, drug addiction or substance abuse, it’s important to remember that the recovery process is different for everyone. Each individual has different needs and challenges when it comes to maintaining a sober lifestyle following completion of a drug rehab program.

Typically, inpatient (residential) treatment programs last 30, 60 or 90 days. These types of inpatient programs often involve medically-assisted detox, which is performed under the supervision of drug and alcohol counselors or medical professionals. Inpatient programs allow participants the opportunity to focus on recovery without the demands of work or family obligations. Many residential programs in New Hampshire are situated in rural settings, giving patients the chance to overcome addiction in a calm, relaxing environment.

Outpatient programs vary in length, depending upon the facility and type of treatment. Some patients transition from an inpatient facility to an outpatient program, while others opt to enroll in an intensive outpatient program due to work, school, or family commitments. Outpatient programs usually involve some type of therapy or counseling and many include 12-step meetings or family programs.

Some recovering addicts greatly benefit from enrolling in a sober living community or halfway house. These programs can last six months or longer and offer participants a substance-free environment, along with peer support and ongoing counseling.

New Hampshire: Looking Ahead

New Hampshire is working to expand access and care for substance abuse and mental health issues to more residents. The State of New Hampshire maintains a Bureau of Drug and
Alcohol Services within its Department of Health and Human Services, which funds evidence-based programs that focus on prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery.

Quite a few of the treatment facilities in New Hampshire are situated on remote, scenic campuses that offer outdoor and recreational activities as part of their treatment program. Some of these rehab centers are payment-assisted, which means that even residents with financial need have the option to participate in one of these wildlife-centric programs. Help is ready and waiting.
