I'm Angela and I'm an addict. 1997 was 20 years ago but I doubt much has changed at Riverbend (I'm not sure if that's the proper name because it's under Recovery Centers of Arkansas) and my experience there was life-changing. I was high the day before I went into treatment but I had cooperated fully with my in-laws who sued for custody of my children (My then husband was also addicted to illicit drugs) because I knew that I couldn't be the mother they needed and deserved until I was free from the vicious cycle of addiction. My first evening at Riverbend was a nightmare. I had not detoxed before coming and was starting to feel the effects of withdrawal. I sucked it up and tried to hide the obvious signs of wd but my counselor saw right through me and called me into her office. I took the offensive position and told her that I wasn't "like these people" who were there for their own reasons... there were ex-convicts and people who had lived on the streets after all. I hadn't ever done anything like that and I wasn't hardened like them. I was secretly intimidated. But my counsellor told me in no uncertain terms that I was EXACTLY like "those people" and that she knew I hadn't detoxed yet. She was furious and was considering sending me packing! That was the first besst/worst thing that happened to me there. Every lesson was all at once painful and terrifying but liberating and clarifying in the end. I never would have gone there if I had known how hard it was going to be but I'm so glad that counsellor didn't kick me out because the counsellors and "those people" saved my life and opened my eyes. I could stop judging others and myself unfairly and I learned how to see myself as i truly am... I am neither as good or as bad a person as I think I am and it's ok - no, it's essential to be able to really see myself as i am. In that way I have been able to work on my problems and to identify my strengths. I have learned how to accept others differences and appreciate people for who they are not what they've done in thee past. Most importantly I've learned that I don't have to use and I've learned practical ways to keep myself safe and addiction free. If you're ready to get clean Riverbend is an excellent place to go. If you want it you can find it there. Angela
