Alcoholism, Drug Abuse, Mental Health, and Treatment in Missouri

Missouri Summary:

For at least ten years, Missouri was well-known for its high use of methamphetamine and the number of meth labs that existed in the state. Missouri still ranks high for methamphetamine use and has problems with heroin and prescription drug addiction. Missouri residents also deal with a variety of mental health issues, like clinical depression and anxiety disorders.

However, in Missouri there are many treatment facilities that provide resources and programs for alcoholism, substance abuse and mental health problems. Missouri has several payment-assisted rehab facilities and other comprehensive treatment options located throughout the state.

Quick Missouri statistics:

  • Missouri state population: 6 million
  • Roughly 8% of Missouri residents age 26 and over have used an illicit drug in the past month
  • An estimated 18% of adults in Missouri are dealing with some type of mental health issue
  • For over a decade, Missouri was known as the “meth capital” of the U.S. However, Missouri now ranks in the top three for meth lab arrests that occur in the state every year

Alcoholism in Missouri

Compared to other states, Missouri sees higher instances of drunk driving. According to data from 2012, the rate for adults ages 21-34 killed in a drunk driving crash was 9.5%, much greater than the national average of 6.7%. Missouri is known for having a very open attitude to consuming alcohol. The state has no restrictions against open containers and there are no laws banning public intoxication.

In Missouri, there are a number of facilities that provide high-quality, affordable treatment for alcohol abuse and addiction. Located in Kansas City, Midwest Recovery Centers offers both an inpatient and intensive outpatient program for residents struggling with alcoholism. At Midwest Recovery Centers, patients engage in structured sober living 24-hours a day in addition to clinical services throughout the week. The facility is based the 12-step model for addiction treatment, which is intended to lead to accountability, respect and recovery. Midwest Recovery Centers is open to men and women and young adults. The treatment center also has designated LGBT programs for patients.

For those seeking a payment-assisted option for rehab, the Family Counseling Center - Stapleton Center is a nonprofit facility located in Hayti, a small town in the southeast corner of Missouri. The Stapleton Center accepts Medicaid, Medicare, military health insurance coverage and has other state-financed treatment payment options. As part of the FCC Behavioral Health network, the facility offers a variety of programs for individuals and families dealing with alcohol addiction, substance use disorders and mental health issues.

Drug Abuse in Missouri

For nearly a decade, Missouri led the U.S. in meth lab incidents. Missouri still ranks in the top three for states that see a high number of arrests involving meth labs each year. As a result, methamphetamine use is a major concern in Missouri. Other commonly abused illicit substances in the state include heroin, synthetic drugs and prescription drugs.

Missouri residents have several options when seeking a rehab center that specializes in drug addiction and substance abuse. Midwest Recovery Centers in Kansas City is one of the most comprehensive rehab programs in the state, offering treatment for a number of drug abuse problems, including opioid addiction. Opiate abuse can include the use of illegal drugs like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like Oxycontin, Vicodin and Percocet. Midwest Recovery Centers has a three-stage treatment program designed to help patients make a full recovery from addiction.

Preferred Family Healthcare in Jefferson City is a payment-assisted facility that has both an inpatient and outpatient program for drug abuse or addiction. The treatment center offers medically-assisted detox, which can include buprenorphine detox and treatment or Vivitrol used for addiction recovery. Vivitrol has been proved effective in treating both opiate addiction and alcoholism. Preferred Family Healthcare accepts Medicaid, Medicaid and other health insurance plans.

Mental Health in Missouri

According to data from 2009 to 2013, almost 5% of adults in Missouri have a serious mental illness. An estimated 4% of adults report thoughts of suicide at least once in the past year. Over 6% of adults also report experiencing a major depressive episode in the past year.

Missouri has a few treatment centers that specialize in mental health. Those struggling with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health problems can also seek treatment at a rehab facility that focuses on helping patients overcome these co-occurring issues.

One payment-assisted option for mental health treatment is Pathways Behavioral Health, a nonprofit facility in the small community of Rolla (halfway between St. Louis and Springfield). Pathways Behavioral Health offers a number of therapy methods, including individual therapy, group therapy, couples therapy, eating disorder treatment and Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), which is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking.

The facility is open to adults, young adults, children and accepts Medicaid, Medicare and private health insurance. Pathways Behavioral Health has bilingual (Spanish-speaking) therapists and staff and has special programs for HIV/AIDS patients and mental health services for active duty military.

How long is an inpatient drug rehab program in Missouri?

The length of drug rehab programs can vary depending on the type of treatment and the facility. Typically, inpatient (residential) drug rehabilitation and recovery programs are either 30-, 60- or 90-day programs. For those who are chemically dependent on alcohol or struggling with opioid addiction, some rehab centers require that patients undergo medically-assisted detox.

Medically-assisted detox can involve the administering of drugs like buprenorphine, which is intended to help with treatment for opiate addiction long-term. Following detox, inpatient rehab treatment usually includes counseling sessions, individual or group therapy, 12-step meetings and rehabilitation activities like fitness classes, nature walks and creative arts therapy.

The majority of treatment centers specializing in addiction and substance abuse also provide outpatient treatment or aftercare support. Outpatient treatment can include day programs, in which participants visit the rehab facility during the week but continue to live at home. After inpatient treatment, some individuals transition to a halfway house or sober living community as a way to continue receiving support while in recovery.

Aftercare support can involve setting goals and making a plan for how one can live substance-free while returning to their normal routines and activities. Family members and loved ones are often encouraged to get involved in an addict’s treatment and recovery, either while in rehab or while they’re transitioning out of an inpatient program.

Does Medicaid cover drug rehab in Missouri?

In the state of Missouri, there are multiple state-financed treatment centers that accept Medicaid patients. Due in part to the Affordable Care Act, health insurance companies — including Medicaid — are prevented from providing less favorable coverage options for substance abuse disorders or mental health treatment. As a government-run program, Medicaid is required to provide coverage for the basic conditions of drug and alcohol dependence recovery.

The Missouri Department of Social Services has information and resources for residents in need of a payment-assisted drug rehab program. To find a treatment center in your local area, one can contact their health insurance provider to ask about which facilities provide services and programs for substance abuse and addiction.

Additionally, the Missouri Department of Mental Health provides information on alcohol and drug use rehab programs throughout the state. The state-run hotline at 1-800-575-7480 has representatives to speak with about getting help for alcohol and drug problems.

Missouri: Looking Ahead

While still known for its high instances of methamphetamine use, Missouri has taken major steps to combat drug trafficking and is aggressive in seizing meth labs. Its designated drug task force is aimed at significantly reducing the state’s methamphetamine epidemic.

Additionally, Missouri is working to expand access for mental health services. Organizations like the Missouri Coalition for Community Behavioral Healthcare are collaborating with state officials on pilot programs that could change how funding for mental health is determined for both providers and patients.

For those struggling with alcoholism, drug addiction or a mental illness, the state of Missouri provides many different types of options for treatment. Help is available to all residents, even those that are low-income or have difficulty paying for a rehab facility. Missouri’s government agencies offer several resources for drug and alcohol treatment and can help residents find a treatment program that’s right for them.
