Kratom Side Effects
Kratom is a drug derived from the leaf of the kratom tree (Mitragyna speciose), a tree native to Southeast Asia. It shares some properties with opiates, and has several similar effects. The drug acts as a stimulant when it is ingested in small quantities and as a sedative when taken in larger amounts. In addition to its traditionally use in Southeast Asia, providing energy for manual laborers, kratom has been used to lessen the negative effects experienced during withdrawal from opiates, for pain relief. It has also been abused and used as a recreational drug.
The drug is relatively new to the U.S., but for hundreds of years before now, kratom had been known of and used in Southeast Asia. Given its most recent abuses, its possession and use are now illegal in select countries. Kratom is not yet banned in the United States. And, although some claim that kratom has certain health benefits, it has not yet been extensively studied or received widespread acceptance.
What Are the Side Effects of Kratom?
Kratom side effects can vary based on the individual, but short term effects can include upset stomach, vomiting, itching, perspiration, loss of appetite, and digestive issues, especially constipation. Long term effects can range from anorexia to frequent urination, darkening of the skin around the face, long term digestive problems, and in extreme cases, hallucinations and psychosis. Kratom overdoes are not considered fatal. However, if kratom is taken on top of other drugs in large quantities it can lead to death. There have been reported cases of what is referred to as “kratom psychosis”, during which addicts were observed to suffer from hallucinations, confusion, and delusions.
What Are the Side Effects of Kratom Withdrawal?
Kratom is an addictive substance. Abusers may become addicted and can experience withdrawal symptoms similar to those of opiate withdrawal. Someone who becomes dependent on kratom, and then suddenly stops taking it, may experience irritability, muscle soreness, tremors, and insomnia.
As with addiction to other substances, you should seek help to get sober and address the driving forces that contribute to substance abuse and addiction. Trying to quit an addictive substance can be extremely difficult if attempted alone. Addiction counseling, inpatient treatment, and alternative rehab programs may be necessary to overcome kratom addiction.
