Drug Abuse Prevention

It is easier to solve a problem by preventing it in the first place, and this is particularly true when it comes to substance abuse. Once people are addicted to drugs, it is often hard to convince them to kick the habit. But if we all spent time learning how to prevent drug abuse, there would be fewer addicts that we would need to treat. We can all participate in substance abuse prevention so that our friends, family, and even ourselves do not run into a problem later.

Effective Strategies

People turn to drugs for many different reasons, and the best drug abuse prevention techniques take this into account. However, most substance abuse prevention strategies include a focus on:

  • Communication: People often become addicted to drugs because they think that they have no one to talk to. In the absence of good communication with friends and family, addicts turn to drugs or alcohol to deal with stress and other problems. People who have strong support networks of friends and family are much less likely to become addicted to drugs. Keeping the lines of communication open with one another gives people resources that they can use instead of falling into addiction.
  • Education: Addiction prevention can also be facilitated through quality education. When people speak with a counselor in an addiction treatment program, they will readily admit that taking drugs or alcohol is pleasurable. Indeed, drugs are so popular because the high they produce feels good physically and mentally at first. What many addicts do not understand, however, are the high health and social costs that they will pay for their addiction. Teaching people about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, especially when they are young, can help keep many of them from becoming addicts who must later enter into professional addiction treatment.
  • Controlling Access: Many people dispute the effectiveness of the war on drugs, but the fact remains that if people cannot gain access to drugs, they cannot become addicted to them. Strategies for drug abuse prevention must include doing what we can to keep drugs out of our hands and the hands of loved ones. Parents, in particular, play a vital role in substance abuse prevention. Simply knowing who your kids hang out with can go a long way in making sure that they do not have friends who will give them drugs.
